Six and a half miles south of Barnsley, in the borough of Rotherham, Wentworth Woodhouse turns an east front of unsurpassed length towards its park.
Thomas Watson-Wentworth, later the 1st Marquess of Rockingham, began the western range in 1725 to a plan by Ralph Tunnicliffe. Henry Flitcroft's East Front followed from about 1734, and John Carr's additions were finished in 1772. The house passed by marriage to the Fitzwilliams, who kept it until 1989, and it is listed Grade I.
After the Second World War the government turned the grounds over to opencast coal mining. From April 1946 the workings came right up to the house and went on into the early 1950s, taking 132,000 tons of coal from the gardens alone. In 2016 the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust bought the house for £7 million, and a government grant for its repair followed that year.
The grounds hold 21 follies, and most stand out in the wider park beyond the edges of your artwork: the Needle's Eye to the north, said to have been built to win a bet about driving a coach through the eye of a needle, and Hoober Stand to the north east, raised to mark the defeat of the 1745 rising. Closer in, the map takes in Carr's stable court of 1768, the Camellia House and the Ionic and Doric Temples.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the middle of the house. The building is so long that the pin can sit almost anywhere along the east front and still be on it; drag it to a particular wing or to the village church if you prefer.
Will the Rockingham Mausoleum be on the map?
No. It stands about 1.8 km to the east, well beyond the edge, and the Needle's Eye, Hoober Stand and Wentworth village are off the map too. What it does show is the house with its nearer grounds: the stable court, the Camellia House, the Ionic and Doric Temples and the ponds in the park.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Wentworth Woodhouse product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Wentworth Woodhouse or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
