Where the River Avon has cut a sandstone cliff below the town, Warwick has had a fortress since 1068, and an Anglo-Saxon stronghold on the same rise before that.
Æthelflæd, daughter of Alfred the Great, founded a burh here in 914 against the Danes. William the Conqueror raised a wooden motte-and-bailey in 1068, rebuilt in stone in the 12th century, and between 1330 and 1360 Thomas de Beauchamp gave the side facing the town its gatehouse, its barbican and the two great towers named Caesar's and Guy's.
Richard Neville, the Kingmaker, held Edward IV prisoner here in 1469. James I granted the crumbling castle to Sir Fulke Greville in 1604, and his family made it a country house and kept it for 374 years, calling in Capability Brown to shape the grounds and Canaletto to paint it. A fire in December 1871 destroyed the Great Hall and the private apartments.
The artwork puts the castle on the south-east side of the old town, with the Avon running below its walls bending away south-west through open parkland. St Mary's Church and the Lord Leycester Hospital sit among the streets to the west, all within an easy stroll of where you married, and the racecourse opens out a little further on.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the castle, inside its walls above the river. The grounds stretch along the Avon, so if your vows were said elsewhere on the estate, drag the pin to that spot before you preview.
Will the town of Warwick be on the map?
Yes. The castle sits at the edge of the town centre, so the old streets, St Mary's Church and the Lord Leycester Hospital all fall inside the frame. The racecourse lies about a kilometre west, beyond the edge.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Warwick Castle product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Warwick Castle or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
