Hedingham Castle keeps watch over the Colne Valley in north Essex, its Norman keep standing high above the village that grew up at its gates, four miles west of Halstead.

The de Vere family, later Earls of Oxford, began building here in the late 11th century, and the great stone keep went up in the 1130s and 1140s. It is often called the best preserved Norman keep in England, with walls up to eleven feet thick, faced with stone hauled from Barnack in Northamptonshire, and rising more than seventy feet.

The keep has known both royalty and siege. Matilda, wife of King Stephen, died here in 1152, and the castle was besieged twice, in 1216 and 1217, during King John's struggle with his barons. A red brick bridge of four spans, built around 1500, still crosses into the inner bailey, and a Queen Anne mansion stands in the outer bailey.

Below the castle, Castle Hedingham keeps many timber-framed medieval buildings and the church of St Nicholas, begun around 1180. On the artwork the village lanes run down into the valley, with Sible Hedingham off the map across it to the south-west, while the castle grounds hold the high ground above them all.

Questions

Where does the pin go?

On the keep. If you would rather mark the mansion in the outer bailey, the grounds, or the church down in the village, drag the pin there before you preview.

Will the Colne Valley Railway show?

No. The railway is more than a kilometre west of the keep, and the map stops about 600 metres either side of the pin. The village of Castle Hedingham, with its church, sits inside, just below the castle.

Can we add our names and the date?

Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.

Is this an official Hedingham Castle product?

No. Maps & Son is not connected with Hedingham Castle or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.

How much does a wedding venue print cost?
