About two miles west of Wells-next-the-Sea, a little way back from the north Norfolk coast, Holkham Hall stands in a deer park, a Palladian house built to hold what one young man carried home from Italy.
That young man was Thomas Coke, later 1st Earl of Leicester, who spent six years on the Grand Tour from 1712 to 1718 and returned with books, paintings and sculpture. The foundations of his house were laid in 1734 and it was completed in 1764, with William Kent, Lord Burlington, Matthew Brettingham and Coke himself all given credit for the design.
Its yellow bricks were cast as exact copies of ancient Roman ones. Inside, the Marble Hall climbs more than 50 feet, built of pink Derbyshire alabaster and modelled by Kent on a Roman basilica. Outside, red and fallow deer graze the park, and the lake was made between 1801 and 1803 from what had been a marshy creek running in from the North Sea.
Two landmarks bracket the house, just beyond the edges of the artwork. To the south, the obelisk of 1730, older than the hall itself, stands on the highest ground in the park. To the north rises the Leicester Monument, a column raised between 1845 and 1848 for Coke of Norfolk. Between them the map holds the hall and the long lake running north through the park beside it, and somewhere in there, you were married.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the hall. If your ceremony or reception was elsewhere in the park, drag the pin to that spot before you preview.
Will Holkham beach be on the map?
No. The artwork reaches only about 600 metres north of the hall, so it shows the house, the lake and the park around them; Holkham village, the coast road and the sands at Holkham Gap all lie beyond the top edge.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Holkham Hall product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Holkham Hall or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
How much does a wedding venue print cost?
Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
