Castle Howard stands in the Howardian Hills, about 15 miles north of York, and a map of your day shows the house the way its builders meant it to be seen: at the heart of a whole landscape laid out around it.
Work began in 1699, when the 3rd Earl of Carlisle asked John Vanbrugh to design him a house. Vanbrugh was a playwright then, with no building to his name, and he worked alongside Nicholas Hawksmoor. Between them they started something that took more than a century to finish.
On the artwork you can follow the grounds they shaped. The Great Lake lies to the north of the house, dug in the 1790s. Just beyond the edges of the map, the Temple of the Four Winds sits at the end of the terrace, the Mausoleum stands out in the park with the New River Bridge below it, and Vanbrugh's obelisk, finished in 1714, still stands on the long avenue that leads up to the house.
In 1940 a fire took the great dome, and it was rebuilt in 1960 and 1961. Since then the house has played Brideshead on screen twice, in 1981 and 2008, and turned up again in Bridgerton. A map of your wedding shows something none of that does: the place you said your vows, pinned on the spot, with Welburn, Coneysthorpe and Terrington out in the countryside beyond its edges.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the house itself. If your ceremony was somewhere else on the estate, drag the pin to that spot before you preview.
Will the Great Lake be on the map?
Yes. It lies just north of the house, and its southern shore and islands fill the top left-hand corner of the artwork, with the rest of the lake running on beyond the edge.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Castle Howard product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Castle Howard or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
How much does a wedding venue print cost?
Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
