Burgh Island Hotel sits on a tidal island about 250 metres off Bigbury-on-Sea in South Devon, reached across the sand at low tide and by sea tractor once the water comes in.

The hotel began with a music hall star. George H. Chirgwin put up a prefabricated wooden house here in the 1890s for weekend parties, and in 1927 the island was sold to the filmmaker Archibald Nettlefold, who built the Art Deco hotel that drew London's smart set in the 1930s, Noël Coward among them.

Agatha Christie visited often, and the island shaped two of her novels: it inspired the setting of And Then There Were None and of the Hercule Poirot mystery Evil Under the Sun. A beach house built for her as a writer's retreat still stands above a pebble beach on the western side, and beside the hotel the Pilchard Inn traces its history to 1336.

Sea tractors have run here since about 1930, and the present one dates from 1969, its passengers riding on a platform high above the waves. On the artwork the island lies just off the mainland, its paths looping over the hill, with open sea around it and the lanes of Bigbury-on-Sea gathered on the headland in the top corner.

Questions

Where does the pin go?

On the hotel, on the island. If you would rather mark the summit, the Pilchard Inn or the beach on the mainland where your guests gathered, drag the pin there before you preview.

Will the mainland be on the map too?

Some of it, in the top right-hand corner. The island is only about 250 metres offshore, so the edge of Bigbury-on-Sea and its lanes make it into the frame across the water. Bantham, about two kilometres along the coast on the estuary of the River Avon, falls well outside.

Can we add our names and the date?

Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.

Is this an official Burgh Island Hotel product?

No. Maps & Son is not connected with Burgh Island Hotel or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.

How much does a wedding venue print cost?

Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
