Between the Strand and the river stands Somerset House, a great Georgian quadrangle that met the Thames itself until the Victoria Embankment was built out in front of it in the late 1860s.

The name goes back to Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset and Lord Protector to the boy king Edward VI, who began a palace here in about 1549 and was executed in 1552 before it was finished. The old house went on to shelter royal consorts, and Anne of Denmark, wife of James I, renamed it Denmark House.

The building on the site now was designed by Sir William Chambers and begun in 1776 as a grand public building for government offices and learned societies. The Navy Board moved into its riverside rooms in 1789, and the Inland Revenue was still at work here through the 20th century. The Courtauld Institute of Art arrived in 1989, the first step in its change into an arts centre.

In winter the courtyard becomes an ice rink, the one in the opening credits of Love Actually, and at other times 55 jets of water rise from its paving. Beyond the walls the artwork reaches from Covent Garden and Waterloo Bridge to the South Bank and the Temple, with the Thames running wide through the middle.

Questions

Where does the pin go?

In the middle of the courtyard, enclosed by Chambers's four ranges. If your day was in the river-facing rooms or one of the later wings to east or west, drag the pin to that side before you preview.

Is Waterloo Bridge on the map?

Yes. It meets the north bank just west of Somerset House, and the map also takes in Hungerford Bridge and Cleopatra's Needle on the Embankment. Blackfriars Bridge, further downstream, falls beyond the frame.

Can we add our names and the date?

Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.

Is this an official Somerset House product?

No. Maps & Son is not connected with Somerset House or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.

How much does a wedding venue print cost?

Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
