Highclere Castle stands among downs and old cedars in the north of Hampshire, about five miles south of Newbury, and millions of people knew its towers long before they learned its name.
The bishops of Winchester held this estate for centuries, and in 1679 Sir Robert Sawyer rebuilt their old palace as Place House. The castle you see now is the work of Sir Charles Barry, who remade it for the 3rd Earl of Carnarvon between 1842 and 1849, while also building the Houses of Parliament, and faced it in Bath stone.
Its later stories travelled a long way. In the 1860s the 4th Earl drafted the act that created Canada here, with John A. Macdonald among his guests, and the 5th Earl paid for Howard Carter's search that found Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922. Since 2010 the castle has played the house in Downton Abbey, first on television and then in the films.
Capability Brown laid out the park in the 1770s, and in 1821 William Cobbett rode through it and called it the prettiest park he had ever seen. On the map the castle sits among lawns and woodland, its drives running out across the park, while the Temple of Diana and Heaven's Gate, a folly of 1749 on Sidown Hill, belong to the wider estate beyond its edges.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the castle. If your photographs were taken at the Temple of Diana or somewhere else in the park, move the pin to that spot before you preview.
Will Newbury be on the map?
No. Newbury is about five miles north, well beyond a map that covers roughly 600 metres either side of the castle. What you will see is the park itself: its drives, paths, woods and the contours of the rising ground.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Highclere Castle product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Highclere Castle or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
How much does a wedding venue print cost?
Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
