On the corner of Brook Street and Davies Street, Claridge's still carries the name of the married couple who ran it in the 1850s, though the building they knew is long gone.
The story starts in 1812, when Mivart's Hotel opened in a single terraced house and spread into the houses next door. In 1854 it was sold to William and Marianne Claridge, who already kept a smaller hotel alongside. They joined the two together, and in time the name over the door became theirs.
Richard D'Oyly Carte bought the hotel in 1893, knocked the old houses down and built afresh. The new Claridge's opened in 1898, with C. W. Stephens as architect and interiors by Ernest George. An Art Deco extension followed in the 1920s under Rupert D'Oyly Carte, and between 2016 and 2021 five storeys of basement were dug out beneath it.
During the Second World War King Peter II of Yugoslavia and Queen Alexandra lived here in exile. The tale goes that a suite was ceded to Yugoslavia for one day in 1945 so their son could be born on Yugoslav soil, though no document survives to prove it. Your artwork keeps to firmer ground: Grosvenor Square a few streets west, Bond Street to the east, and a corner of Hyde Park in the far south west.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the hotel, at the Brook Street and Davies Street corner. Mayfair's blocks are small, so if your ceremony was at a church a few streets away you can move the pin and Claridge's will still be in view.
Will Hyde Park show?
Only a corner of it, in the bottom left where the park meets Park Lane. Marble Arch is about 800 metres west, just beyond the edge, but Grosvenor Square, Bond Street and the stretch of Oxford Street to the north are all on the map.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Claridge's product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Claridge's or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
How much does a wedding venue print cost?
Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
