Set on cliffs above the Bristol Channel, a mile and a half west of Llantwit Major, St Donat's Castle has terraced gardens that step down to the shore and views across the water to Devon and Somerset.

The Stradling family held St Donat's for about four centuries. Sir Peter Stradling extended the castle around 1300, and in Tudor times Sir Thomas Stradling began the terraces that his son Sir Edward carried on down towards the sea. The line ended in 1738, when the last Sir Thomas died in a duel in France.

In 1925 William Randolph Hearst bought the castle and rebuilt it lavishly, bringing in parts of Bradenstoke Priory and a church in Boston, Lincolnshire. Marion Davies was often there, and guests included Charlie Chaplin, Clark Gable, Winston Churchill and a young John F. Kennedy. George Bernard Shaw reportedly said it was what God would have built if he had had the money.

Since 1962 the castle has been home to Atlantic College, the first United World College. On the artwork the castle sits right by the shore, with the parish church of St Donat close beside it and the coastline running along below. Your wedding joins a long line of gatherings on this clifftop.
