Syon Park runs down to the Thames opposite Kew, and the house at its heart has belonged to one family, the Percys, Dukes of Northumberland, since Henry Percy acquired it in 1594.
The name comes from Syon Abbey, a house of Bridgettine nuns founded by Henry V in 1415, which moved to this site in 1431 and was closed in 1539. The Duke of Somerset built a new house on the ground, and on 9 July 1553 Lady Jane Grey was brought here to be told she was Edward VI's heir to the throne.
In 1609 the mathematician Thomas Harriot drew the moon through a telescope at Syon, several months ahead of Galileo. From 1762 Robert Adam remade the great rooms for the 1st Duke of Northumberland, Capability Brown laid out the park and lake, and in 1827 Charles Fowler completed the Great Conservatory, the first conservatory built from metal and glass on a large scale.
The artwork follows the Thames along the park's south-eastern side, where a tidal meadow floods twice a day, and the long lake curves through the grounds just north of the house. Isleworth and All Saints' Church sit at the south-west corner, and across the water lies Kew, on the same stretch of the river that Turner painted Syon from in the early 1800s.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On Syon House itself. If your day centred on the Great Conservatory in the gardens, or the hotel in the grounds, drag the pin across to it before you preview.
Will Kew Gardens be on the map too?
Only as the far bank. The Thames runs along the south-eastern side of the park with Kew across it, but Kew Palace, the glasshouses and most of the gardens lie beyond the edge of the frame.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Syon Park product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Syon Park or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
How much does a wedding venue print cost?
