Hidden in woodland at the north end of the Peckforton Hills, Peckforton Castle looks like a medieval fortress, yet it was finished in 1850 for a Victorian landowner who wanted a real one.

John Tollemache, later the 1st Baron Tollemache, was a wealthy Cheshire landowner whom Gladstone called the greatest estate manager of his day. Between 1844 and 1850 he spent £60,000 having Anthony Salvin build him a castle of rock-faced red sandstone, with a gatehouse, a dry moat and a round tower five storeys high.

Historic England calls it the last serious fortified home built in England. Its later lives have been varied: a hostel for disabled children in the Second World War, a private home, a film location for the 1991 Robin Hood with Patrick Bergin and Uma Thurman, and a hotel since Evelyn Graybill converted it after buying it in 1988.

Look north from the castle and you see its older neighbour. Beeston Castle, a genuine medieval ruin, crowns its own crag under a mile away, just past the top of the artwork. What the map holds is the wooded hill around Peckforton, its contours crowding the slopes, with the Sandstone Trail passing below on the north side, a path your guests might have walked the morning after.

Questions

Where does the pin go?

On the castle in the woods. If your photographs were taken somewhere else on the hill, you can drag the pin there before you preview.

Is Beeston Castle on the map too?

No. It stands about 1.2 km north of Peckforton, just beyond the top edge of the artwork, which covers about 600 metres either side of the pin. The hill, the woods and the Sandstone Trail below the castle are all inside the frame.

Can we add our names and the date?

Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.

Is this an official Peckforton Castle product?

No. Maps & Son is not connected with Peckforton Castle or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.

How much does a wedding venue print cost?

Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
