Lulworth Castle was built as a hunting lodge for an Elizabethan viscount, and it stands in parkland at East Lulworth, under the Purbeck Hills and a short way inland from Lulworth Cove.
Thomas Howard, 3rd Viscount Howard of Bindon, laid its foundations in 1588 and finished the lodge in 1609. In 1641 Humphrey Weld bought it from Howard's heir, and from then on the story of the castle and the land around it is largely the story of the Weld family.
In 1786 Thomas Weld built St Mary's Chapel in the grounds with King George III's permission; it is reputed to be the first Roman Catholic chapel built in England since the Reformation. The king was entertained here, and in 1830 Charles X of France stayed briefly after losing his throne. On the artwork the chapel sits just north of the castle, with St Andrew's Church close by and East Lulworth's cottages to the east.
On 29 August 1929 a fire gutted the castle and left a roofless shell. Restoration with English Heritage began in the 1970s and gave it back a roof and sound walls by 1998, though the floors inside were never replaced. On the map the drives loop through the park around the castle and Broom's Plantation lies to the south; Bindon Hill, the cove and the cliffs are further south still, beyond the edge.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the castle, in the middle of its park. If your ceremony was at St Mary's Chapel or another spot on the estate, drag the pin there before you preview.
Will Lulworth Cove be on the map?
No. The cove is a little over two miles south west of the castle, beyond the bottom edge. Bindon Hill, which rises between the park and the sea, falls outside too; the map stays with the park and East Lulworth.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Lulworth Castle product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Lulworth Castle or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
