Hot water has risen on this spot in the centre of Bath for thousands of years, and the Pump Room was built in the 1790s so that fashionable visitors could drink it in style.
Below the room lies the reason for everything. The Romans built a temple here between 60 and 70 AD to Sulis Minerva, and the town that grew round it was Aquae Sulis, the waters of Sulis. The spring still produces about 1,170,000 litres a day, rising at 46 degrees, and the Great Bath beside it is lined with lead from the Mendips.
Thomas Baldwin began the present Pump Room in 1789 and John Palmer finished it in 1799. Beau Nash, Master of Ceremonies at Bath from 1704, had long since made taking the waters a social ritual, and Jane Austen set scenes of Northanger Abbey and Persuasion here. The spa water still runs from a marble vase, and the Pump Room Trio still plays.
On the artwork the Pump Room sits in a tight knot of streets at the heart of the city, with Bath Abbey just across the churchyard and the Roman Baths beside it. The curve of the River Avon is drawn a short walk to the east. Raise a glass of the water to the two of you, if you dare.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the Pump Room, beside the Roman Baths and facing the Abbey Church Yard. The buildings are close together, so the pin sits right in the middle of the old city.
Will Bath Abbey show?
Yes. The Abbey is only a few steps away across the churchyard, so it is drawn right beside the pin, with the river and the city's streets around it.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official The Pump Room product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with The Pump Room or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
