Burghley House stands under a mile south of Stamford, the limestone town on the River Welland that became the first conservation area in England and Wales, and its park meets the town on two sides.
William Cecil, later Lord Burghley and Lord High Treasurer to Elizabeth I, built the house between 1555 and 1587 at a cost of £21,000; his tomb is in St Martin's Church in Stamford. More than a century later, between 1697 and 1699, Antonio Verrio painted the ceilings of the Heaven Room and the Hell Staircase.
Capability Brown shaped the park, and its avenues still follow his designs of 1755 to 1779; he also made the lake between 1775 and 1780. On the artwork you can follow the lake as it curves below the house to the south, with the Lion Bridge, the boathouse and the banqueting house in the grounds nearby.
Since 1961 the park has hosted the Burghley Horse Trials, now a five star competition held in early September, and the house has appeared in Pride and Prejudice, The Da Vinci Code and The Crown. Northwards the closer map stops within the park, with the River Welland and the streets of Stamford only about a mile away beyond its top edge.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the house. The park is large and the lake curves round to the south, so if your photographs were taken elsewhere in the grounds, drag the pin to that spot before you preview.
Is Stamford on the map?
No. The River Welland and the town lie about a mile to the north and north west, beyond the top edge. The closer map stays with the house, the lake and the park around them.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Burghley House product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Burghley House or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
How much does a wedding venue print cost?
