Titanic Belfast stands on Queen's Island, on the very ground where the ship was built, its angular prow aimed down the old slipways towards the River Lagan.
Queen's Island was reclaimed from the water in the middle of the 19th century, and Harland and Wolff built their slipways and graving docks here for Olympic, Titanic and Britannic. On 31 May 1911 around 100,000 people watched Titanic slide down her slipway into the water. The slipways and docks are listed today, and the land around them was renamed the Titanic Quarter in 2001.
The building opened on 31 March 2012, designed by CivicArts with Eric Kuhne and Associates and Todd Architects. It stands 38 metres high, the height of Titanic's hull, and about 3,000 silver anodised aluminium shards clad its faces. Nine galleries tell the story inside, and the Launch gallery looks straight out over the slipway the ship left from.
Around the pin your artwork fills with the shipyard's remains. The Olympic and Titanic slipways run down to the water, SS Nomadic, the last White Star Line vessel, sits in Hamilton Dock just to the south, and the old Harland and Wolff drawing offices, now the Titanic Hotel, stand alongside. Goliath, the elder of the two great cranes, rises to the south east, and across the river are the city's quays.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the building, at the head of the slipways. If you would rather mark the Titanic Hotel in the old drawing offices or the Nomadic in her dock, drag the pin a short way across before you preview.
Is the River Lagan on the map?
Yes. It runs up the left side of the map past the docks, widening as it heads north towards Belfast Lough. Lagan Weir and the bridges into the city centre lie a little beyond the bottom left corner.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Titanic Belfast product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Titanic Belfast or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
