Where the City of London meets the Thames, the Tower has kept watch for more than nine centuries, from the day work began on William the Conqueror's White Tower.
That work is usually dated to 1078. Later kings wrapped the keep in walls and towers: St Thomas's Tower, built between 1275 and 1279 as the river entrance, became known as Traitors' Gate, and the chapel of St Peter ad Vincula was rebuilt under Henry VIII in 1519. In 1988 the whole fortress was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Plenty of it still runs to old rules. At least six ravens live within the walls, cared for by the Ravenmaster, one of the Yeoman Warders, because legend says the kingdom will fall if they leave. The Ceremony of the Keys takes place each day, and the Crown Jewels sit in the Waterloo Block, a former barracks. The moat was drained and filled from 1843.
On the artwork you can trace the square of walls and the dry moat around them, with Tower Hill opening out on the landward side. Tower Bridge crosses the river beside the fortress, St Katharine Docks lie a few hundred metres east, and HMS Belfast is moored upstream on the far bank. The City's streets press in from the west.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the White Tower, the keep at the centre of the fortress. The walls, moat and wharf all fit easily around it, so the pin can stay there even if your photographs were taken down by the river.
Does Tower Bridge show?
Yes. It sits just south east of the Tower, crossing the Thames, with St Katharine Docks to the east and HMS Belfast a short way upstream.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Tower of London product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Tower of London or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
