Chatsworth stands low on the east bank of the River Derwent, four miles north-east of Bakewell, with its park running down to the water and wooded hills climbing behind it towards the moors.
The Cavendish family have held Chatsworth since 1549. Bess of Hardwick began the first great house in 1553, and Mary, Queen of Scots was brought here several times as a prisoner from 1570. The house that stands today grew out of the rebuilding William Cavendish, later the 1st Duke of Devonshire, started in 1687.
The garden owes most to one man. Joseph Paxton arrived as head gardener in 1826, aged 23, and in the 1840s, expecting a visit from the Tsar of Russia, built the Emperor Fountain, fed by a lake dug on the moors above. On the artwork you can trace the Canal Pond south of the house, the river Capability Brown straightened, and Bess's Hunting Tower of 1582 up in Stand Wood.
Across the Derwent lies Edensor, the estate village that successive dukes moved out of sight of the house, where most of the family are buried in the churchyard of St Peter's. Chatsworth has been voted Britain's favourite country house more than once and appeared in the 2005 film of Pride and Prejudice. Your wedding becomes one more chapter, pinned among its paths.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the house, on the east bank of the river. If you would rather mark a spot in the garden, by the Cascade or the Emperor Fountain for instance, drag the pin there before you preview.
Will Edensor and the river be on it?
The river, yes: the Derwent runs down the left-hand side, with Paine's Bridge crossing it just west of the house. Edensor, about 900 metres west across the park, falls just beyond the edge, and Bakewell, four miles away, is far beyond it.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Chatsworth House product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Chatsworth House or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
