Highcliffe Castle looks out over the sea from the cliff top at Highcliffe, east of Christchurch, and from its oriel window the view runs across the gardens to the Needles and the Isle of Wight.

Charles Stuart, Lord Stuart de Rothesay, a former diplomat, began it in 1830, and William Donthorne built the house over the next five years. Into its walls went carved medieval stone shipped from Normandy, from Jumièges Abbey and the Grand'Maison at Les Andelys, so a Gothic Revival house of the 1830s carries pieces far older than itself.

Its guests were remarkable. Kaiser Wilhelm II stayed for three weeks in November 1907 and gave two stained glass windows to the owner, Edward Stuart Wortley. Harry Gordon Selfridge leased the castle from 1916 to 1922 and modernised its bathrooms, heating and kitchen. He lies in the churchyard of St Mark's, which you can find on the artwork a short walk north east of the castle.

Decline followed. After a sale in 1967 one fire damaged the Great Hall, and a second in 1968 cost the house its staircase. Christchurch Council bought it in 1977, repairs began in 1994, the East Tower was rebuilt by 1998, and more phases followed in 2008 and 2018. On the map the shoreline runs below the house, the cliff top woods lead away west towards Steamer Point, and Highcliffe's streets fill the north and east.

Questions

Where does the pin go?

On the castle itself. If you'd rather mark a particular spot, out on the lawns or down on the beach, drag the pin there before you preview.

Will the Isle of Wight be on the map?

No. It lies miles across the water to the south east, well beyond the edge of the artwork. The beach and the sea directly below the castle are drawn, so the coast you looked out on is there.

Can we add our names and the date?

Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.

Is this an official Highcliffe Castle product?

No. Maps & Son is not connected with Highcliffe Castle or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.

How much does a wedding venue print cost?

Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
