Longleat lies a few miles west of Warminster, in Wiltshire, and its story as a family home begins in 1541, when Sir John Thynne bought the land for £53.
His first house burned down in April 1567. The one that replaced it, built from 1568 and effectively complete by 1580, was largely his own design, with Robert Smythson as the main architect. Later generations reshaped the grounds: Capability Brown swept away the formal gardens for the 1st Marquess of Bath, and Humphry Repton advised the 2nd.
In 1949 Longleat became the first stately home in Britain to open to the public on a commercial basis, a way for the 6th Marquess to keep the house going after heavy death duties. Seventeen years later came the safari park, the first drive through safari park outside Africa, and a hedge maze followed under the 7th Marquess.
On the artwork the house sits at the head of a string of water: Half Mile Pond to the north, and Ford Pond and the ponds below it running away to the south, with the hedge maze to the north west. Just beyond the bottom edge lies Horningsham, whose Congregational chapel is believed to be the oldest Free Church in England still used for worship.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the house, in the middle of the park. The safari park and gardens spread out around it, so if your day centred on another spot on the estate, drag the pin there before you preview.
Is Horningsham on the map?
No. The village sits just under a mile south of the house, beyond the bottom edge of the artwork. The chain of ponds that runs south towards it is drawn, and so is the hedge maze to the north west of the house.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Longleat House product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Longleat House or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
