Kew began in 1759 as a royal widow's garden beside the Thames and has grown into 132 hectares of glasshouses, lawns and trees, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2003.
Augusta, Dowager Princess of Wales, enlarged an exotic garden begun by Lord Capell, and Sir William Chambers dressed it with buildings: the Orangery, finished in 1761, and the Great Pagoda, 50 metres high, in 1762. Five trees from 1762 still stand, known as the Five Lions. In 1840 the gardens were adopted as a national botanic garden.
The Palm House followed between 1844 and 1848, the work of the architect Decimus Burton and the iron founder Richard Turner, and the first large-scale structural use of wrought iron. The Temperate House has twice its floor area and is the largest Victorian glass structure left in the world; it reopened in May 2018 after a five-year restoration.
The artwork centres on the Palm House, with Kew Palace and the edge of Kew Green at the top and the Temperate House to the south. The lake lies to the south-west, and the Thames curls past the north-west corner. The Great Pagoda stands just beyond the bottom of the map, in the south-east corner of the gardens.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the Palm House, the best known of Kew's glasshouses. The gardens cover 132 hectares, so if your day was at the Temperate House, Cambridge Cottage on Kew Green or anywhere else in the grounds, drag the pin there before you preview.
Will the Pagoda be on the map?
No. It stands in the south-east corner of the gardens, about a kilometre south of the Palm House, just past the bottom of the frame. The Temperate House, halfway there, is on the map.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Royal Botanic Gardens product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Royal Botanic Gardens or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
How much does a wedding venue print cost?
