Twelve miles from Belfast, in the County Down village of Royal Hillsborough, Hillsborough Castle is where the royal family stay when they visit Northern Ireland.
The Hills shaped this place long before the house. Arthur Hill built Hillsborough Fort in 1650 to command the road from Dublin to Carrickfergus, and the family went on to become Earls of Hillsborough and Marquesses of Downshire. The mansion was built for them in 1770, and the village church of St Malachy went up between 1760 and 1774.
In 1922 the 7th Marquess sold the house to the government. The Duke of Abercorn, the first Governor of Northern Ireland, moved in during 1925, and it became Government House. The Anglo-Irish Agreement was signed here on 15 November 1985. Mo Mowlam opened the grounds to the public in 1999, and Historic Royal Palaces has looked after it since 2014.
Your artwork centres on the house with the village close around it. St Malachy's stands a few hundred metres to the east, and past it the old fort keeps watch over the lake in Hillsborough Forest. Visiting dignitaries have long planted trees in the grounds here, so your day joins a long habit of leaving a mark.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the house. If you were married at St Malachy's or want the pin out in the gardens, drag it there; the castle stays on the map either way.
Will the lake show?
Yes. The lake in Hillsborough Forest lies under a kilometre to the south east of the house, beside the old fort, and the village streets around the castle are on the map too.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Hillsborough Castle product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Hillsborough Castle or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
