Leeds Castle rises from islands in a lake made from the River Len, seven miles south-east of Maidstone, and from the far bank its walls seem to float on the water.
A Saxon chief called Led built in timber here in 857, and Robert de Crevecoeur rebuilt in stone in 1119. In 1278 the castle passed to Eleanor of Castile, queen to Edward I, and the king probably created the lake that wraps around it. Henry VIII later reworked it in 1519 for his first wife, Catherine of Aragon.
Most of what stands today comes from a Tudor-style remodelling finished in 1823, paid for by selling family estates in Virginia. In 1926 the castle was bought by Olive, Lady Baillie, who filled it with weekend guests through the 1930s, from film stars to royalty. When she died in 1974 she left it to a foundation, and it has been open to visitors since 1976.
On the artwork the water leads the eye, from the moat around the castle out to the wider lake and the River Len feeding it, with the paths and woods of the grounds and the golf course in the parkland. The maze shows as a small knot of paths to the south-east, while Broomfield to the south and the village of Leeds to the west, along the lanes towards Maidstone, both lie beyond the edges.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the castle itself, on its island. If your day centred on somewhere else in the grounds, such as the gardens or the lakeside, move the pin there before you preview.
Will the lake and moat show?
Yes. Water is drawn on every map, so the lake around the castle and the River Len running through the grounds both appear, along with the paths and woods around them.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Leeds Castle product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Leeds Castle or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
How much does a wedding venue print cost?
Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
