Few London addresses are as well known as 150 Piccadilly, where The Ritz has looked out across Green Park since it opened in May 1906.
The hotel was the work of the Swiss hotelier César Ritz, who opened it eight years after his hotel in Paris. His architects, Charles Mewès and Arthur Davis, cleared the site of the Walsingham House Hotel, whose brick foundations had to be blasted away, and put up one of the earliest substantial steel frame structures in London.
Outside, the building reads as Paris on Piccadilly. Its long arcade echoes the Rue de Rivoli, the mansard roof on the Green Park side recalls the Louvre's Pavillon de Flore, and green copper lions, the hotel's emblem, sit at the roof corners. Inside are the Palm Court, home of tea at the Ritz, and the Rivoli Bar, designed in 2001 to resemble a bar on the Orient Express.
Your artwork places all of that in a few city blocks. Green Park opens out beside the hotel and runs down to the Victoria Memorial, with the lake in St James's Park just beyond it and Buckingham Palace a few steps past the bottom edge. Piccadilly runs east past the Royal Academy, and the streets of St James's and Mayfair crowd in to the north and south. That is a good deal of London to stand behind one afternoon's photographs.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the hotel, on the corner where Piccadilly meets Green Park. If you married at a church or register office nearby, drag the pin there and The Ritz should stay on the map as long as it is within a short walk.
Is Buckingham Palace on the map?
Not quite. The palace sits about 700 metres south of the hotel, just past the bottom edge, but the Victoria Memorial in front of it is on the map, along with Green Park, the lake in St James's Park and the Royal Academy.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official The Ritz product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with The Ritz or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
How much does a wedding venue print cost?
Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
