Out in the lanes between Frome and Radstock, Babington House keeps a small Georgian church at its elbow, and the two have stood side by side for close to three hundred years.

The house went up around 1705 for Henry Mompesson, and much of the medieval village of Babington seems to have been cleared to make way for it. Excavations in 1997 found traces of the lost houses. Mompesson's manor was later altered and extended, including in 1790, and today it is listed Grade II*, with its grounds on the register of historic parks and gardens.

The Church of St Margaret was built next to it in about 1748, possibly by John Strahan or William Halfpenny, and is very like Redland Chapel in Bristol. It has a rounded apse, a small west tower topped by an octagonal cupola, and an unusual Hanoverian royal arms. A charitable trust owns it, quite separately from the house, which Soho House turned into a hotel and club.

Look closely at the artwork and a chain of five informal pools shows just west of the house. Beyond them there is little but contour lines, field lanes and open farmland; Kilmersdon, Ammerdown House and Vobster all lie out past the edges. For the guests, it is a reminder of how far into the green they travelled.

Questions

Where does the pin go?

On the house. St Margaret's stands right beside it, so whichever of the two you said your vows in, the pin marks the spot.

Is Mells on the map?

No. The village of Mells lies about 3 km to the south east, well beyond the edge, and Kilmersdon is off the map too. The map keeps close: the house and church, the pools, the lanes and the rising ground around them.

Can we add our names and the date?

Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.

Is this an official Babington House product?

No. Maps & Son is not connected with Babington House or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.

How much does a wedding venue print cost?

Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
