Kensington Palace looks out over Kensington Gardens, and it began as a country house on the edge of London, bought by a king whose asthma could not bear the fog and floods of the riverside at Whitehall.
In the summer of 1689 William III and Mary II paid £20,000 for what was then Nottingham House and set Sir Christopher Wren to work enlarging it. Queen Anne added the Orangery in 1704, and under George I a little-known painter called William Kent decorated the state rooms, finishing the King's Staircase with 45 figures from the Georgian court.
On 24 May 1819 a princess named Alexandrina Victoria was born in rooms on the south-east corner of the palace, and she grew up there under the strict regime her mother devised. More than a century and a half later it became the London home of Diana, Princess of Wales, and after her death in 1997 over a million bouquets were laid at its gates.
The artwork takes in the western half of the gardens that Henry Wise and Charles Bridgeman began laying out under Queen Anne, with the Round Pond just east of the palace among the lawns and avenues. Busy roads cross the top and the foot of the map, and on the west the streets of Kensington close in around the place where your guests gathered.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the palace building, at the western edge of Kensington Gardens. If you would rather mark the Orangery just to the north, or a favourite spot in the gardens, drag the pin there before you preview.
Will Hyde Park show as well?
No. The map takes in the western half of Kensington Gardens, with the Round Pond to the east of the palace, but the Long Water, the Serpentine and Hyde Park beyond them all lie past the edge of the frame.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Kensington Palace product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Kensington Palace or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
