Chewton Glen is named after a tree-lined ravine, Chewton Bunny, that runs a short way south of the house, where the New Forest gives way to the coast at New Milton.
A Chewton Glen House is on record by 1732. From 1837 until 1855 it belonged to George Marryat, and his brother, the novelist Captain Frederick Marryat, stayed here in the 1840s while he wrote The Children of the New Forest. The forest he wrote about begins just beyond the hotel's own grounds.
The Duval family bought the house in 1947 with its farm, stables and 120 hectares, restored the old buildings and opened a hotel in 1962. Four years later the brothers Martin and Trevor Skan took it on and ran it for forty years. Since 2007 it has belonged to Ian Livingstone's London and Regional, and treehouse suites now sit out among the trees.
On the artwork the old Chewton stream, known now as Walkford Brook, runs down its valley just west of the grounds and on towards the coast, which lies a little beyond the bottom edge. Streets of houses fill the lower part of the map, with Walkford just past the western edge and Highcliffe further on. It makes a good record of the place your guests stayed up late, a short walk from the waves.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the main house. If you would rather mark the treehouses or a spot in the gardens where you had your photographs taken, drag the pin there before you preview.
Will the sea show?
No. The shore is a little over a kilometre south of the house, beyond the bottom edge. What you will see is Walkford Brook running down its valley beside the grounds towards the coast, with the main road and the streets beyond it.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Chewton Glen product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Chewton Glen or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
