Raised in 1072 on orders from William the Conqueror, Durham Castle crowns a rocky loop of the River Wear, facing the cathedral across Palace Green, and for most of its life it housed bishops who ruled like princes.

For centuries the Bishops of Durham held powers that elsewhere belonged to the Crown, and they kept them until an Act of Parliament in 1836. Their castle grew with them. Bishop Antony Bek built the Great Hall early in the 14th century, Bishop Hatfield added a minstrels' gallery, and Bishop Cuthbert Tunstall gave his name to a Tudor chapel.

The oldest room you can still visit is the Norman Chapel, built around 1075 or soon after 1080. Since 1837 the castle has been home to University College, so students now live where the prince-bishops once held court. In 1986 castle and cathedral together were made a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Few places look better as a map. On the artwork you can trace the Wear bending tightly around the peninsula, with the castle at its northern end, the cathedral to the south across the green, and Prebends Bridge crossing the river beyond. The pin sits at the centre, exactly where you made your promises.

Questions

Where does the pin go?

On the castle at the north end of Palace Green. If you would rather mark the cathedral or another building on the peninsula, drag the pin there before you preview.

Can the map show the cathedral too?

Yes. Durham Cathedral is only about 200 metres south of the castle, so it is drawn alongside it, with the loop of the river wrapping around both.

Can we add our names and the date?

Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.

Is this an official Durham Castle product?

No. Maps & Son is not connected with Durham Castle or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.

How much does a wedding venue print cost?

Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
