Waddesdon Manor crowns a hill above the village of Waddesdon, west of Aylesbury, a Rothschild house modelled on the châteaux of France and set down in the Buckinghamshire countryside.
Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild bought the estate in 1874. The house he wanted needed a hilltop, so the summit of bare Lodge Hill was levelled first, and the foundation stone was laid on 18 August 1877. His architect, Gabriel-Hippolyte Destailleur, borrowed features from the châteaux of Maintenon and Chambord.
A bare hill also needed trees. William Barron brought large ones in from the surrounding countryside, and Elie Lainé laid out the gardens. By 1889 a cast iron aviary, inspired by eighteenth century pavilions at Versailles and Chantilly, stood in the grounds. Ferdinand's sister Alice inherited in 1898, and in 1957 James de Rothschild left the house, grounds and contents to the National Trust.
On the artwork the manor sits at the top of its hill with the parterre to the south and woods around it. Waddesdon village lies just beyond the eastern edge, along the A41, with the church of St Michael and All Angels, which dates from 1190, among the houses, school and village hall Ferdinand added when he made Waddesdon an estate village.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the manor, at the top of Lodge Hill. If your celebration was at the aviary or elsewhere in the grounds, drag the pin to that spot before you preview.
Will the village show?
No. Waddesdon village is less than half a mile east of the manor, just beyond the right hand edge. The closer map stays with the hilltop, the gardens and the aviary to the west of the house.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Waddesdon Manor product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Waddesdon Manor or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
How much does a wedding venue print cost?
