In the parish of Hever, on the River Eden east of Edenbridge, stands the castle where Anne Boleyn spent her early youth, given a lake and an Italian garden more than a century ago by an American millionaire.
The oldest part, the gatehouse and its walled bailey, dates from 1270, and the gatehouse still holds the oldest working original portcullis in England. In 1462 Geoffrey Boleyn built a Tudor house inside the walls, and in 1505 his grandson Thomas inherited it, bringing up George, Mary and Anne Boleyn here.
Anne was sent to the court of the Archduchess Margaret in the Low Countries in 1513 and went on to marry Henry VIII. After her father died in 1539 the castle passed to the King, who gave it to Anne of Cleves in 1540 when their marriage was annulled. Thomas Boleyn lies in the village church of St Peter, a short walk away.
William Waldorf Astor bought Hever in 1903, restored it, added the Astor Wing for his family and guests, created the lake and laid out the Italian Garden for his Greek and Roman statuary. On the artwork the lake spreads east of the castle, the yew maze planted in 1904 sits close by, and the lanes of Hever lead off through fields and woods.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the castle itself. The Astor Wing and the Italian Garden lie close beside it, so if your day was centred on one of them, drag the pin there before you preview.
Will the lake show?
Yes. It opens out just east of the castle and runs to the edge of the frame, and the village of Hever with St Peter's Church, a short way west, is on the map too.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Hever Castle product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Hever Castle or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
