A few hundred metres from Brighton's beach, the Royal Pavilion rises out of the town centre in onion domes and minarets, the seaside retreat a fun-loving prince built up between 1787 and 1822.

George, Prince of Wales, first came to Brighton in 1783, aged 21, and his physician told him the sea air would help his gout. He rented a modest farmhouse facing the Old Steine, had Henry Holland enlarge it from 1787, and between 1815 and 1822 John Nash turned it into the Indian-style palace that survives, with interiors full of Chinese and Indian fancy.

Queen Victoria found Brighton too public and sold the Pavilion to the town in 1850 for £53,000. In the First World War it became a hospital, and from December 1914 to January 1916 more than 2,300 men of the Indian Army were treated here. In 1921 the Maharaja of Patiala unveiled a gateway in Indian style to remember them.

Around the pin the artwork lays out the town the prince made fashionable: the Pavilion Garden and the Brighton Dome beside it, once his riding school and stables, the narrow streets of the Lanes, and the seafront with the Palace Pier reaching out to sea. The streets of North Laine climb the slope behind, towards the railway station just out of the frame.

Questions

Where does the pin go?

On the Pavilion itself, in its garden off the Old Steine. If you would rather mark the Brighton Dome next door or a favourite spot on the seafront, drag the pin there before you preview.

Will the sea be on the map?

Yes. The coast runs across the lower part of the artwork, roughly 400 metres south of the Pavilion, with the Palace Pier reaching out from it into open water.

Can we add our names and the date?

Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.

Is this an official Royal Pavilion product?

No. Maps & Son is not connected with Royal Pavilion or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.

How much does a wedding venue print cost?

Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
