Bamburgh Castle sits on a crag of dark volcanic dolerite above the Northumberland shore, with the dunes and a long beach at its feet and the village of Bamburgh gathered to the west.

People have held this rock for a very long time. A Brittonic fort called Din Guarie stood here, and in 547 Ida of Bernicia took the citadel. The name comes from Bebba, wife of King Æthelfrith, who was given it around 600. In 1464, during the Wars of the Roses, it became the first British castle to fall to gunfire, after a nine month siege.

Lord Crewe acquired it in 1704, by then a ruin, and in 1894 William Armstrong bought it and restored it over the following decade. His family own it still. On the artwork the castle fills its crag beside the sands and the dunes, with the village, its walled garden and the church spread out to the west and south west.

St Aidan's Church carries the name of the saint who built a wooden church outside the castle wall in 635 and died here in 652. In its churchyard lies Grace Darling, who helped rescue survivors of the Forfarshire on 7 September 1838; her memorial was placed so passing ships can see it. Offshore lie the Farne Islands, and Holy Island is about five miles north.

Questions

Where does the pin go?

On the castle, at the top of its crag. If your vows were said in the village instead, drag the pin west towards St Aidan's before you preview.

Will the beach show?

Yes. The sands and the dunes behind them run diagonally across the top right of the map, just beyond the castle. The Farne Islands are too far out to sea to appear.

Can we add our names and the date?

Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.

Is this an official Bamburgh Castle product?

No. Maps & Son is not connected with Bamburgh Castle or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.

How much does a wedding venue print cost?

Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
