Knebworth House has been the Lytton family's home since 1490, and the park around it, just outside Stevenage, has drawn some of the biggest crowds in the history of British music.

Sir Robert Lytton acquired the manor in 1490. What stands now is largely Victorian: between 1843 and 1845 Henry Edward Kendall Jr transformed the old house into the Tudor Gothic building of today, and Edward Bulwer-Lytton, the Victorian author, dressed the gardens in a formal Italianate style.

The next generations added their own layers. Sir Edwin Lutyens, who married Lady Emily Bulwer-Lytton, redesigned much of the interior and simplified the main parterre, and in 1907 Gertrude Jekyll drew a herb garden that waited until 1982 to be planted. In 1989 the house played Bruce Wayne's manor in Batman.

The concerts began in July 1974. The Rolling Stones headlined in 1976, Queen gave their last show with Freddie Mercury on 9 August 1986, and Oasis played two nights in 1996 to about 250,000 people.
