On Cromwell Road Alfred Waterhouse raised a building that looks like a Romanesque cathedral and is dedicated to rocks, plants and animals, and Londoners have been walking in to stare at its ceilings since April 1881.
It exists because Richard Owen, put in charge of the British Museum's natural history collections in 1856, argued they needed a home of their own. Captain Francis Fowke won the design competition in 1864 but died the following year, so Waterhouse took the scheme over, reworked it in his own style and built it between 1873 and 1880.
He faced it inside and out in terracotta, which stood up to the soot of Victorian London, and covered the tiles with plants and creatures: living species in the west wing, extinct ones in the east. Since 2017 the central Hintze Hall has been watched over by Hope, the 25 metre skeleton of a blue whale, which took the place of Dippy the Diplodocus.
The museum's central axis lines up with the tower of Imperial College, the Royal Albert Hall and the Albert Memorial, and the artwork follows that line north to the Hall, with Kensington Gardens just beginning at the top. The Science Museum and the V&A stand beside it on Exhibition Road, so the heart of the quarter known as Albertopolis is drawn around your pin.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the Waterhouse building, facing Cromwell Road. The museum fills a whole city block, so if you would rather mark the Exhibition Road entrance or the wildlife garden on the west lawn, nudge the pin there before you preview.
Will the Royal Albert Hall be on the map?
Yes. It stands about half a kilometre north of the museum, inside the frame, with the edge of Kensington Gardens running along the very top of the map. The Albert Memorial sits right on that edge.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Natural History Museum product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Natural History Museum or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
How much does a wedding venue print cost?
