Alnwick Castle has guarded the crossing of the River Aln for more than nine centuries, and the old market town of Alnwick still crowds up against its walls on the south side.

Ivo de Vesci raised the first parts of the castle in about 1096, and it was rebuilt in stone in 1157. Early in the fourteenth century it passed to the Percy family, and in 1766 Hugh Smithson and Elizabeth Seymour became the first Duke and Duchess of Northumberland. Between 1854 and 1865 the 4th Duke paid Anthony Salvin to remodel it in a medieval style, Prudhoe Tower included.

On the artwork the Aln curls along the north side of the castle, with the Pastures beyond it, the park Capability Brown and Thomas Call landscaped. To the east is the Alnwick Garden and its Grand Cascade, first opened in October 2001. In the streets to the south you can find Bondgate Tower, the only part of the medieval town wall still standing, and the Tenantry Column, raised in 1816.

The castle stood in for Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films, and Downton Abbey filmed here too. Hulne Park, with the ruins of its priory, stretches away north west beyond the edge of the map. Your guests will remember the battlements from the photographs; the artwork keeps the town, the river and the place you married together on one sheet.

Questions

Where does the pin go?

On the castle, inside its walls. If you married somewhere else on the estate or in the town, drag the pin to that spot before you preview.

Does the map reach Barter Books?

Yes. The old railway station that houses it, one of the largest second-hand bookshops in England, is on the south east side of the town, just inside the bottom right corner of the artwork.

Can we add our names and the date?

Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.

Is this an official Alnwick Castle product?

No. Maps & Son is not connected with Alnwick Castle or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.

How much does a wedding venue print cost?

Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
