In the middle of the Welsh capital, a Roman fort, a Norman keep and a Victorian fantasy share one walled site, and around them the city has grown right up to the gates of Cardiff Castle.
The Romans came first, building a fort here around AD 55. In the late 11th century the Normans raised a motte inside the old walls, and a shell keep was added to its top around the middle of the 12th century. That keep still stands on its mound inside the walls, looking down over the green.
The castle's look today belongs to the 3rd Marquess of Bute, who inherited it before his first birthday, and to the architect William Burges. Their Gothic Revival rebuilding began in 1868 with the Clock Tower, 40 metres high and carved with figures of the planets. On the Animal Wall outside, carved creatures still keep watch over the street.
In 1947 the 5th Marquess gave the castle and its park to the people of Cardiff. On the artwork, Bute Park opens to the west and north, with the River Taff curving through it, the civic buildings of Cathays Park stand to the north, and the Principality Stadium is just south. Your day happened in the middle of all that.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
Inside the castle walls. If your ceremony or reception was in a particular part of the grounds, drag the pin to that spot before you preview.
Is the river on the map?
Yes. The Taff runs through Bute Park just west of the castle, so it shows clearly on the artwork, as do the streets of the city centre around it.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Cardiff Castle product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Cardiff Castle or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
How much does a wedding venue print cost?
Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
