North-west of Buckingham, at the head of a long avenue, Stowe House faces one of the most famous gardens in England, a landscape that taught Capability Brown his trade.

The Temple family bought the estate in 1589, and Richard Temple, 1st Viscount Cobham, who inherited it in 1697, turned the grounds into his life's work. Charles Bridgeman designed for him from 1711, William Kent joined in 1731, and in March 1741 a young Lancelot Brown became head gardener. The Grecian Valley, made between 1747 and 1749, is his first known landscape.

The house grew with the garden. Vanbrugh gave it a north portico in the 1720s, and a new south front, from a design by Robert Adam adapted by Thomas Pitt, was finished in 1779. Since 11 May 1923 it has been home to Stowe School, while the gardens and most of the park passed to the National Trust in 1989.

The artwork takes in a good deal of Cobham's world. The Octagon Lake lies south of the house, with the Palladian Bridge just to its east, and Kent's Elysian Fields and Brown's Grecian Valley are drawn too. The Corinthian Arch of 1765 stands further south on the avenue, just beyond the frame, but most of the walks your photographer took are somewhere on the sheet.

Questions

Where does the pin go?

On the house. If you were married at one of the temples or elsewhere in the gardens, drag the pin to that building before you preview.

Does the Corinthian Arch make it onto the map?

No. It stands about 1.2 km south of the house, beyond the bottom edge of the artwork. The Octagon Lake, the Palladian Bridge and the Elysian Fields, all between the house and the arch, do show.

Can we add our names and the date?

Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.

Is this an official Stowe House product?

No. Maps & Son is not connected with Stowe House or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.

How much does a wedding venue print cost?

Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
