The Dorchester looks across Park Lane into Hyde Park, and every one of its rooms faces either the park or the hotel's own landscaped terraces.
The ground has a long pedigree. It was part of the Manor of Hyde, which William the Conqueror gave to Geoffrey de Mandeville, and in 1751 a large house went up here for the Damer family. It became Dorchester House in 1792 and stood until 1929, when Sir Robert McAlpine and Sons bought the site and pulled it down.
Owen Williams began the design and left in February 1930; William Curtis Green finished it. They built in reinforced concrete, which gave big rooms with no pillars to hold them up, and the upper eight floors rose in ten weeks on a concrete deck three feet thick. The hotel opened on 18 April 1931.
That concrete earned it a name as one of the safest buildings in wartime London, with the Turkish baths in use as air raid shelters. General Eisenhower took a first floor suite in 1942 and ran his headquarters from it in 1944. On your artwork the park fills the west, the tip of the Serpentine just showing at its edge, with Grosvenor Square to the north and Hyde Park Corner to the south.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the hotel, on Park Lane at the corner of Deanery Street. If your ceremony was at a church or register office elsewhere in Mayfair, drag the pin there before you preview.
Will the Serpentine be on the map?
Only its eastern tip, right at the western edge. Most of the lake lies beyond it, and so does Marble Arch to the north, but Hyde Park Corner, Apsley House and Grosvenor Square are all inside the frame.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official The Dorchester product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with The Dorchester or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
