Cliveden crowns a chalk ridge forty metres above the Thames near Taplow, on the Buckinghamshire side of the river, its terrace looking south across a vast parterre towards Berkshire.
Three houses have stood on this spot. The 2nd Duke of Buckingham built the first in 1666, and it burned in 1795; its successor burned in 1849. The present house was designed by Charles Barry in 1851, with a Latin inscription around the roofline composed by Gladstone, and it sits on a brick terrace that survives from the 17th century.
Music and scandal both belong to its story. On 1 August 1740, while Frederick, Prince of Wales rented the house, Rule, Britannia! was first performed in public here, in a turf amphitheatre cut into the cliff. Under the Astors it hosted the Cliveden Set between the wars, and Spring Cottage by the river played its part in the Profumo affair of the early 1960s.
The National Trust now cares for the gardens, and the house runs as a hotel. On the map you can follow the drive up the lime avenue to the house, the paths of the great four-acre parterre below the south terrace, and the woods falling away to Cliveden Reach, where the Octagon Temple stands 200 feet above the water.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the house, at the top of its terrace. If your photographs were taken down by the river or out in the gardens, drag the pin to that spot before you preview.
Is the Thames on the map?
Yes. The river runs just below the house, inside the map's 600 metres or so either side of the pin, so the wooded bank, Cliveden Reach and the Berkshire side opposite all appear.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Cliveden House product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Cliveden House or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
