Harewood House stands in a thousand acres of parkland that Capability Brown shaped, just off the road from Leeds to Harrogate, still the home of the Lascelles family more than 250 years after it was built.
Edwin Lascelles laid the foundations in 1759, with John Carr as his architect and Robert Adam designing the interiors, and the house was finished by 1771. In the 1840s Sir Charles Barry raised the wings by a storey and laid out the formal terraces and parterres, giving the house the outline it keeps today.
Harewood has a royal wedding of its own in its past. In 1922 Henry, Viscount Lascelles married Princess Mary, the only daughter of George V, and the couple made Harewood their home from 1929. Turner came to paint the grounds around 1797, and much later part of the estate became the village in the long-running soap Emmerdale.
On the map the house sits above its lake, with Barry's terraces laid out below it. Harewood village, where the A61 meets the A659 by the estate gates, lies just beyond the eastern edge, and further north-east stand the ruins of Harewood Castle. Pin your day here and the park frames the spot where it happened.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
On the house. If your photographs were taken by the lake, in the Himalayan garden or at All Saints' Church in the grounds, move the pin there before you preview.
Will Harewood village be on it?
No, it falls just outside. The village is about a kilometre east of the house and the map stops about 600 metres either side of the pin, so the ruins of Harewood Castle are off it too. The lake, the terraces and All Saints' Church in the grounds are all inside.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Harewood House product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Harewood House or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
