Lord Burlington came home from Italy in 1719 with a passion for the buildings of Andrea Palladio, and in Chiswick, a short walk from the Thames in west London, he built a villa of his own.

After a fire at the old Jacobean house in 1725, Burlington designed the villa with William Kent and built it between 1726 and 1729, with room for an art collection said to hold some of the best pictures in Europe. Kent took the lead on the garden, one of the earliest English landscape gardens, and around 1727 a lake was made by widening the Bollo Brook.

Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, called Chiswick her earthly paradise and filled its garden with Whig politicians. Charles James Fox died in the house in 1806, and George Canning in the same room in 1827. In 1813 Samuel Ware added a conservatory 300 feet long for camellias, and on 20 May 1966 the Beatles filmed promotional films for Paperback Writer and Rain there and in the gardens.

The map sets the villa among its lawns and trees, with the long lake made from the Bollo Brook curving away to the west and Hogarth's House close by to the north-east, beside the A4. The Thames comes into view along the eastern edge, so the guests' walk to the river is there to trace, while Barnes and its railway bridge lie further downstream.

Questions

Where does the pin go?

On the villa at the centre of the gardens. If your photographs were taken at the conservatory or by the lake, both a short walk away, drag the pin there before you preview.

Will the river show?

Yes, along the eastern edge. The Thames is a little over half a kilometre from the villa, so a strip of it fits on the map, but Chiswick Mall, Strand on the Green and Barnes Railway Bridge lie beyond the frame.

Can we add our names and the date?

Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.

Is this an official Chiswick House product?

No. Maps & Son is not connected with Chiswick House or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.

How much does a wedding venue print cost?

Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
