On a wooded headland above the sands of the Dwyryd estuary, Portmeirion is a village that one architect spent fifty years building, to show that a beautiful place need not spoil its setting.
Clough Williams-Ellis acquired the estate in 1925. It had been a private estate called Aber Iâ, developed in the 1850s, and he renamed it Portmeirion, turned the main house into a hotel that opened the following year, and kept adding to the village until 1975. He was knighted in 1972 for services to architecture and the preservation of the environment.
Much of what he built was rescued. Fragments of demolished buildings from Wales and Cheshire found new homes here, among them a plaster ceiling from Emral Hall. The Campanile went up in 1927 and 1928 and the Bristol Colonnade in 1958. Noël Coward wrote Blithe Spirit during a stay, and in 1966 and 1967 the village became the setting of The Prisoner.
The artwork holds the whole of it: the village's lanes, the hotel, and the woods of Y Gwyllt, the wild garden, spreading over the headland. Around them the estuary opens out towards the sea, its channel and sandbanks drawn as water and shore. Somewhere among all that colour and greenery, you said your vows.
Questions
Where does the pin go?
In the heart of the village. If you married at the hotel or another building in Portmeirion, drag the pin to it before you preview.
Will Porthmadog or Penrhyndeudraeth show?
No. Both are a couple of miles away, beyond the edges of the artwork. What fills the frame is the headland, the woods and the estuary around them.
Can we add our names and the date?
Yes. Your names go in the title and the date goes beneath it, or write whatever you like there. You see the finished artwork before you pay.
Is this an official Portmeirion product?
No. Maps & Son is not connected with Portmeirion or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the venue and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
How much does a wedding venue print cost?
Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
