Shelsley Walsh circuit map print

Not a track outline: a real map of the circuit and the land around it.

A map artwork of Shelsley Walsh: an orange line climbs from the bottom of the map, bends left and then right across closely packed contour lines, and meets a cluster of blue lanes at the top, on pale grey relief shading.

Cars have been raced up this hill above the River Teme since August 1905, on a farm track the tenant offered to the Midland Automobile Club, which still runs the climb.

The lap, and the ground it runs over

Shelsley Walsh is not a lap. It is a single run from a standing start beside old farm buildings, up a narrow road cut into the bank, timed against the clock. Ernest Instone's Daimler set the first record in 1905 at over a minute; the best runs today take barely more than twenty seconds.

Raymond Mays made his name here in the 1930s, and a young Stirling Moss won in 1948. The club leases the land rather than owning it, and in 2005 the Shelsley Trust raised the money to renew the original lease, so the climb could go on running on the hill where it began.

On the artwork the climb is the orange line, rising from the bottom of the map and bending left and then right as it gains height. The contour lines crowd together along its length, which is the gradient a driver feels, and the lanes of the Teme valley run beside it.

The designer opens with the lap already drawn and the frame fitted to it. Write your title and the line beneath it, choose from 19 styles, and preview the finished artwork before you buy.

Questions

Is it a circuit or a climb?

A climb, run one car at a time from the bottom to the top. The line on the artwork is the climb as mapped, 1.038 km from end to end, a little more than the timed course because the mapped road runs on beyond it.

Can I add my time?

Yes. The title and the line beneath it are yours to write, so a time, a class, an event or a date all fit. The Shelsley Walsh course is drawn for you, and you see the finished artwork before you buy.

Where does the course length come from?

It is measured from the track itself, as mapped by OpenStreetMap contributors, so it can differ by a few metres from the figure a circuit publishes.

Is this an official Shelsley Walsh product?

No. Maps & Son is not affiliated with or endorsed by Shelsley Walsh or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the circuit and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.

How much does a race circuit print cost?

Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
