Mallory Park, at Kirkby Mallory between Leicester and Hinckley, began after the war as a pony trotting track, and the oval the trotters ran on is still the heart of the lap.
The lap, and the ground it runs over
Motorcycle clubs raced on grass here before the track was rebuilt in tarmac, and the new circuit opened in April 1956, with a motorcycle meeting as its first race. Its long right-hander, Gerard's Bend, turns almost all the way back on itself and is named after Bob Gerard, who opened it. In 1962 over fifty thousand people came to the Post TT meeting to watch Mike Hailwood win.
The lake inside the oval came later, in the early 1960s, when a sluice gate was set across the brook. It fills most of the infield on the artwork, with smaller pools beside it, and the lap wraps round it in one smooth line. At the top of the map the track leaves the oval for a narrow loop to Shaw's Hairpin and back, and Devil's Elbow, blind and downhill, brings the lap onto the Kirkby Straight and the line.
The designer opens with the lap already drawn and the frame fitted to it. Write your title and the line beneath it, choose from 19 styles, and preview the finished artwork before you buy.
Questions
Is the hairpin loop on the map?
Yes. The lap drawn is the oval with its loop out to the hairpin, 2.033 km as measured from the map. The chicanes added for motorcycles are not part of the line.
Can I add my lap time or finishing position?
Yes. The title and the line beneath it are yours to write, so a lap time, a result, a race or a date all fit. The Mallory Park lap and its length are drawn for you, and you see the finished artwork before you buy.
Where does the lap length come from?
It is measured from the track itself, as mapped by OpenStreetMap contributors, so it can differ by a few metres from the figure a circuit publishes.
Is this an official Mallory Park product?
No. Maps & Son is not affiliated with or endorsed by Mallory Park or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the circuit and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
How much does a race circuit print cost?
Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
