Harewood's hillclimb runs up the farm road through Stockton Farm, north of Leeds, where cows were sometimes herded across the course between runs.
The lap, and the ground it runs over
Arnold Burton, who had bought the farm from the Harewood Estate, let the Yorkshire Centre of the British Automobile Racing Club improve his farm road and race up it. The first meeting was on 16 September 1962, and the club still runs a full season of events here every year.
The course was later extended, and the club describes it as the longest hillclimb in England. Some of its corners are named for the farm it crosses, Farmhouse Bend, Orchard and Willow among them, and others for people: Clark's Corner and Chippy's. The Esses complete the set.
It is a climb, not a lap, run one car at a time against the clock. On the artwork it is the red line, doubling back on itself up the hillside in a series of hairpins, with farm tracks crossing between them and green blocks of woodland to the east.
The designer opens with the lap already drawn and the frame fitted to it. Write your title and the line beneath it, choose from 19 styles, and preview the finished artwork before you buy.
Questions
Why does the line end where it does?
Because Harewood is a climb run one car at a time, not a circuit. The line is the extended course, 1.434 km from start to finish as measured from the map.
Can I add my time?
Yes. The title and the line beneath it are yours to write, so a time, a class, an event or a date all fit. The Harewood Speed Hillclimb course is drawn for you, and you see the finished artwork before you buy.
Where does the course length come from?
It is measured from the track itself, as mapped by OpenStreetMap contributors, so it can differ by a few metres from the figure a circuit publishes.
Is this an official Harewood Speed Hillclimb product?
No. Maps & Son is not affiliated with or endorsed by Harewood Speed Hillclimb or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the circuit and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.
How much does a race circuit print cost?
Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
