Mount Panorama is a racing circuit for a few weekends a year and a public road the rest of the time, looping up and over the hill on the edge of Bathurst.

The lap, and the ground it runs over

Work on the road began in 1936 and the first meeting, for motorcycles, was held in 1938. Outside race events anyone can drive it, in either direction, and some houses can only be reached from the circuit itself. The Wiradjuri people called the mountain Wahluu, meaning to watch over, and it was a place of initiation for young men long before any engine was heard on it.

The touring car race that made the name has been held here since 1963. On the artwork the shape tells the story: a long climb up one side, a twisting run across the top and down the steep face, then the fastest straight on the circuit, the run back towards town. A chicane was added on that straight in 1987.

The map shades the hill in relief, so the dark high ground sits right against the twisting part of the lap, where the road clings to the slope. At the other end the line runs close to the streets and tracks on the town side of the hill, and a fine web of lanes and property boundaries spreads out across the farmland around it.

The designer opens with the lap already drawn and the frame fitted to it. Write your title and the line beneath it, choose from 19 styles, and preview the finished artwork before you buy.

Questions

Is the whole mountain lap drawn?

Yes, the full 6.197 km lap, up the hill, across the top and back down to the long straight, drawn from the road itself as mapped.

Can I add my lap time or finishing position?

Yes. The title and the line beneath it are yours to write, so a lap time, a result, a race or a date all fit. The Mount Panorama (Bathurst) lap and its length are drawn for you, and you see the finished artwork before you buy.

Where does the lap length come from?

It is measured from the track itself, as mapped by OpenStreetMap contributors, so it can differ by a few metres from the figure a circuit publishes.

Is this an official Mount Panorama (Bathurst) product?

No. Maps & Son is not affiliated with or endorsed by Mount Panorama (Bathurst) or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the circuit and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.

How much does a race circuit print cost?

Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
