Aintree's motor circuit runs inside the Grand National course, sharing the racecourse's grandstands, and for a few years in the 1950s and 1960s it held the British Grand Prix.

The lap, and the ground it runs over

It was built in 1954 and called the Goodwood of the North. The British Grand Prix came here five times between 1955 and 1962. Stirling Moss won his first in 1955, and in 1957 he and Tony Brooks shared the win in a Vanwall, the first time British drivers had won the race in a British car.

The full Grand Prix lap was last raced in 1964. What survives is the Club circuit, the lap drawn on the artwork, which runs wholly inside the horse racing course and wraps round a public nine-hole golf course. Car sprints, track days and motorcycle meetings keep it busy today.

The map shows the lap as a long, pointed loop on flat ground, with a small pond inside it, the canal running along its northern side and the streets of Aintree packed close on either edge of the racecourse. It is a quiet shape for a place that once drew crowds of around 150,000.

The designer opens with the lap already drawn and the frame fitted to it. Write your title and the line beneath it, choose from 19 styles, and preview the finished artwork before you buy.

Questions

Is this the old Grand Prix circuit?

No. The artwork draws the Club circuit, 2.450 km as measured from the map, the layout still in use. The longer Grand Prix lap went further round the racecourse and has not been raced since 1964.

Can I add my lap time or finishing position?

Yes. The title and the line beneath it are yours to write, so a lap time, a result, a race or a date all fit. The Aintree Motor Racing Circuit lap and its length are drawn for you, and you see the finished artwork before you buy.

Where does the lap length come from?

It is measured from the track itself, as mapped by OpenStreetMap contributors, so it can differ by a few metres from the figure a circuit publishes.

Is this an official Aintree Motor Racing Circuit product?

No. Maps & Son is not affiliated with or endorsed by Aintree Motor Racing Circuit or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the circuit and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.

How much does a race circuit print cost?

Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
