Spa-Francorchamps runs through the forested hills of the Ardennes in eastern Belgium, between the villages of Francorchamps, Malmedy and Stavelot.
The lap, and the ground it runs over
The first circuit, in the 1920s, was a triangle of public roads linking those villages, far longer than today's lap. The present circuit opened in 1979 and keeps its most famous stretch: La Source, the plunge to Eau Rouge and the climb up Raidillon, then Kemmel, Les Combes and, much later, Blanchimont. Eau Rouge takes its name from the stream the track crosses at the bottom of the valley.
The relief shading on the artwork shows what television never quite does: how far the lap falls and climbs, and how much of it runs through forest.
