Llandow Circuit circuit map print

Not a track outline: a real map of the circuit and the land around it.

A map artwork of Llandow Circuit: a thin red line traces a long, rounded oval with a small kink on its lower straight, surrounded by pale grey roads, a winding smaller track to the north and faint contours, all in soft off white and grey.

Llandow was a wartime airfield in the Vale of Glamorgan, south west of Cardiff, until a local farmer bought a piece of it and joined the old runways into a lap.

The lap, and the ground it runs over

RAF Llandow was decommissioned in 1957. Four years later Jack Evans, who farmed nearby, bought a parcel of the site with its air raid shelters, gun turrets and runways, and with the South Wales Automobile Club linked the concrete into a simple oval. Graham Hill opened the circuit in 1963.

Crowds of several thousand came in the 1960s and 1970s, before the track lost its licence in 1977 and spent years given over to stock cars, grass tracking and grazing sheep. It was resurfaced and reshaped, and won a sprint licence back in 2001. Track days, testing and filming fill the calendar now.

The artwork shows why the lap is so quick: two long straights joined by sweeping ends, one small kink in the bottom straight, and the open, level land of the old airfield all round it. A smaller, twistier track sits just to the north, and lanes cross the fields beyond.

The designer opens with the lap already drawn and the frame fitted to it. Write your title and the line beneath it, choose from 19 styles, and preview the finished artwork before you buy.

Questions

Why is the lap almost an oval?

Because it was made by joining lengths of old runway together. The line on the artwork is the circuit as mapped today, 1.410 km round, after it was reshaped and resurfaced.

Can I add my lap time or finishing position?

Yes. The title and the line beneath it are yours to write, so a lap time, a result, a race or a date all fit. The Llandow Circuit lap and its length are drawn for you, and you see the finished artwork before you buy.

Where does the lap length come from?

It is measured from the track itself, as mapped by OpenStreetMap contributors, so it can differ by a few metres from the figure a circuit publishes.

Is this an official Llandow Circuit product?

No. Maps & Son is not affiliated with or endorsed by Llandow Circuit or its owners. The name says which place is mapped: this is a map of the circuit and the land around it, drawn from OpenStreetMap.

How much does a race circuit print cost?

Prints start at £24.95, printed on 240 gsm smooth fine-art paper, with delivery included to the UK and 25 other countries. Sold as A4, A3, A2 or A1 prints, unframed, at standard sizes so a ready-made frame will fit.
