Goodwood's motor circuit is the perimeter road of a wartime fighter airfield, RAF Westhampnett, near Chichester, and the airfield is still in use inside it.
The lap, and the ground it runs over
Racing ran here from 1948 until 1966, and the circuit has kept its period shape ever since, which is why its historic meetings feel the way they do. The lap on the artwork runs round the outside of the airfield, and its runways are drawn too, crossing the infield in bold lines.
Madgwick, Fordwater, St Mary's, Lavant and Woodcote are all on it, with the roads and fields of the Sussex coastal plain around the airfield.
